The Potsherd Gate

Then you shall break the flask in the sight of the men who go with you, and shall say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: So will I break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter's vessel, so that it can never be mended.  Jeremiah 19:10-11a

Somewhere

Potsherd Gate: amid the shards

of broken clay pots

an object of wrath

was broken to show

leaders how final consequences

would come to a nation.

Scattered

in a graveyard of clay

was a flask shattered

in a message from God

left to be forgotten

but the lesson remembered:

God would break His people

Unshaken

by the experience of brokenness

and unfazed by warning

Sin was unrepented

men were unheeding

a city was unyielding

a nation was unhealed

Voided

the plans of Judah failed

the hopes of Jerusalem dashed

until another greater One came

outside another gate He offered

Himself broken and spilled

to restore a shattered world whole in Him
