Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.” John 12:7-8
Mary’s gift to Jesus in John 12 is extravagant, humble, total, and irrevocable. What she did will always be told and could never be taken back.
She poured out her costly perfume, knelt to the floor, and wiping Jesus’ feet with her hair, held nothing back. It was total submission, total worship, and total sacrifice.
Today, on Good Friday, we recall an even greater outpouring: Christ pouring Himself out fully over our sin. Mary’s devotion becomes in a sense our call to worship as we see Jesus poured out for us.
Do not offer to Jesus leftovers and remnant pieces; offer Him your entire life — your best time, your valued treasures, and your entire heart! Let your worship of your devoted Lord be costly, your repentance sincere, and your tearful love visible. He was all that for you on the cross.
As the fragrance of Mary’s irretrievable commitment filled the house, may your consecrated life fill the place where God has placed you as you devote yourself today to your crucified, glorified, and now magnified Savior.
