abundance from the Almighty

You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine and bread to strengthen man's heart.

Psalm 104:14-15

God chooses to bless us by providing from our very labors the bounty that we need. From the earth, which humanity must steward, comes our food, our drink, our refreshment, and our sustenance. God’s normal means of care is bound up in the universe He has created for us to cultivate. From the world that God has made for us there is provision, strength, health, joy, and abundance for all. He sustains us as King of this earth.

This common grace is something in which we should always rejoice. It is right to be thankful for a meal, to praise God that He has brought forth food from the earth for us. It is a kind of worship that in gratitude we celebrate by uncorking a bottle, pouring fresh oil, and breaking bread together. In fact, as I contemplate God’s provision this morning, I pause to remember that at the Lord’s Table in worship yesterday the bread and the wine were not just provisions for mere physical sustenance… but greater symbols of our greatest provision of a sustaining Savior in Jesus Who gave His life for us to have life! Eat this bread! Drink this cup! Proclaim Me!

Lord, with a grateful heart I will take in my daily bread. I will rejoice in Your great provision. I will feast and feed and celebrate that in what we can cultivate, You provide food from You good earth. And in the gift of Jesus our Savior their is eternal sustenance and joy. Amen
